Full of news

I'm just full of news today....
  • I will be interviewing for a new position at the seminary sometime after I return from vacation. I am told I'm the top candidate. Having been told a position was mine to lose and then losing it, I don't believe it when people say things like that. Nevertheless, I'm thrilled to still be in the running for the job. If I get it, I will have a substantial increase in responsibility. I hope it comes with a substantial increase in pay.
  • My morning runs are now officially morning runs and not run/walks. The redbuds are blooming, along with the bartlett pears and the daffodils. The path in the park is electric with color and new life. As I felt the cool morning air fill my lungs, I thought, "I'm so glad to be alive." To go from living caught between a subtle desire for death to come and take me away and a fear that it would come before I ever had a chance to truly live to really being alive is the greatest gift. I pray I never forget that.
  • I got a hair cut on Saturday. Because of a miscommunication with the stylist, it ended up shorter than it's ever been. It's _short_. Today, the contract computer guy who is here nearly everyday said to me, "You've got a new hair cut, don't you?" I said yes and explained that it was a lot shorter than I expected it to be. He rushed in to reassure me, "I don't really like short, but yours is good. It's not like it's butch or anything. That wouldn't be good. But yours is good." I'm thinking, now, that it's butch. Not that there's anything wrong with that....
  • I met with the president of the local PFLAG chapter today. She did a marvelous job of helping me sift through all of the possible next steps I could take with my mom until I knew in my gut what to focus on. As hard as it was to talk about it, I feel much better. I am so deeply aware of how the relationships and acquaintances I've been given here have made living freely and openly a possibility for me. It's overwhelming when I think of all I've been given in the last year. Amazing....
  • I got an email in response to the one I sent last night. We're going to have coffee when I get back from California. :-)

hooray for emails!

I'll quiz you in the car about situations and conversations and what to say and do.

For example, I say: "girl asks for your phone number. what do you do?"

Time's up! Time's up! You gotta be _prepared_ for these things.

Anyone else have ideas for things I can quiz on? It's a long car ride.

Oh, this will show you where my mind is (clearly not the right place). I thought you were going to quiz me about situations and conversations I will have on the interview. It's 1.5 days of interviews (that includes the evening of the first day full day).

Yes, do tell JM what she can quiz me on.... I can hardly wait to see what you all come up with! ;-)

JM said...

the interviews? oh hell no.

The best I could come up with is:

God. Yes or No?

Beyond that, you got me.

Linda said...

It's for an assistant dean's position...enrollment management and student services. God is very unlikely to come up at all in the interview. They want to know what I think about things like retention, student records, sexual harrassment, etc.

Linda said...

I should add, though, I'm happy for you to quiz me on the other stuff. I clearly need all the help with that I can get.

JM said...

So, beyond:

retention: good idea
student records: good idea
sexual harassment: bad idea

what else?

I think jm has this all sown up. You could finish your interview in, like, 2 minutes. And move on to coffee...

I'm just sayin'.

I agree- wrap up the interview early and move on to coffee.

Basic coffee or fancy coffee drink? Now that might be worth some discussion...

Oh, I wish I was going on this trip. I love the role-playing dating game.

She reaches over for the sugar and brushes your arm. Do you

a)blush
b)look into her eyes and smile
c)knock over the sugar in surprise or
d)say to her, "You need some cream with that?"

JM said...

jo(e) - there's still time! get yourself a ticket! :)

Linda said...

Oy, these situations confound me... Are there right answers?

JM said...

you could always go with e) all of the above.

Maybe we could try another scenario. I think it's the mention of sugar that's messing me up. I had a problem with sugar this weekend. I was out for breakfast and needed sugar for my grits. There was a nice big sugar shaker right there, but I kept digging through the sweetener packets looking for sugar, oblivious to the big jar right under my nose. So, now I'm thinking coffee's a bad idea, because I have trouble with sugar. Maybe we should go for a walk instead. ;-)

Hey! Did any of you notice that there are five bullet points to this post? ;-)

jo(e) said...

I have a short attention span. I can only remember that last bullet point.

jo(e) said...

And JM got it right -- all of the above was the answer. Blushing is cute. Knocking over the sugar is too. Eye contact -- very important. And any attempt at humor, no matter how corny, will score you points.

Have we figured out yet what you are going to wear?

Linda said...

Crap! I hadn't even started worrying about what to wear yet! ;-)

I can't concentrate on anything since I read the phrase "sugar for my grits". What kind of heresy is that? I sure hope they don't ask about the proper way to eat grits in your interview.

Marie said...

Okay, okay, scenario:

She puts her hand on the table, where you could reach it if you wanted to. What do you do?

AND, I say you post pics of you in the new hair post haste. I can't wait to see it!!

Linda said...

There's a proper way to eat grits that doesn't involve sugar? Oy!

And if she puts her hand on the table, that means something? I'm so not ready for this....

JM said...

yeah, I wasn't even going to start in on the whole "what's up with the sugar in the grits" crap. you have enough on your plate already.

ha! plate! grits!

i slay me.

(p.s. butter and pepper on grits. that is all.)

Linda said...

Butter and pepper on grits? You can't be serious.

concretegodmother said...

I always thought cheese went on grits!

JM said...

and cheese. but definitely not sugar. sugar is for cream of wheat -- an entirely different food.

thewayseeker said...

Dude I'm so late to this party and the right way to eat grits is with butter and pepper.

JM said...

vindicated!

Is it wrong for me to point out that everyone likes flirting with Linda? In which case the coffee date should be no problem?
